First Breakfasts Darwin-Style

There is no meal I love more than a weekend breakfast, I’m not quite sure why. I think there’s just something so nice about the idea of fuelling up for a long day of total freedom. Weekends are, after all, just a gateway for adventure, and that is something I can definitely get behind.

So, when I arrived back in Darwin, one of the first things I wanted to do was get breakfast with two of my favourite mates (I and E), and my favourite long dog, at our favourite morning walking haunt on the coast. Cafe De La Plage, on a muggy September morning, was just what the doctor ordered for a serious case of homesickness. With Dean back in Melbourne, and six weeks of teaching practical ahead of me, I was happy to take anything to cheer me up. That particular morning, it was crêpes with lashings of Nutella and artistically placed strawberries and flaked almonds, enjoyed alongside a smooth latte and a view of the beach.

While I have loved moving to Melbourne, and I’ve grown quickly to consider that southern city my home, the tropical girl in me has missed the beach. Low tide, with the sand stretched out before me in the morning light, and the rising sun beating a tan into my skin, is a comfort to me. It’s a sweaty comfort, but it’s a comfort just the same.

These next six weeks are going to be hard, there is no doubt about that. Dean and I are happily co-dependant, and we’ve had our share of being apart. Still, sometimes there comes opportunities that cannot be passed up. My heart hurts, but life is like that.

So until I get back to my pair in Melbourne town, I’ll just have to make do with a funny long dog, good friends, and my favourite meal by the beach.
