Oscar Is One! [Cake Smash]

Is it weird to say that I’ve been excited about Oscar’s cake smash every since we brought him home from the hospital? A year ago his first birthday seemed like such a long time away and as we were struggling with the challenges of early parenthood and taking care of this beautiful newborn, Dean and I often marvelled at the idea that in just 12 short (but long) months our little guy would be celebrating his first birthday, and smashing into a cake all on his own.

That being said, we didn’t want his first birthday to be super over the top. We didn’t throw a party or do anything extravagant, except I did a bit of baking, a spot of decorating, got Oscar dressed in something a bit cute and let him go crazy with a mini birthday cake.

Originally we were going to do the cake smash outside, but unfortunately the weather just wasn’t there on the date that we picked (the Sunday before his birthday) so we adjusted and went with an indoor smash. In the end, I am actually super happy with how it turned out. These pictures, while they’re not perfect by any stretch, do perfectly capture our little boy at this cheeky, playful stage in his life, as well as giving a glimpse into how much he has changed in the past year.

Oscar’s cake was a three tier mini cake (10cm rounds I think?) which I baked myself. In the end I just did a pretty simple nude cake with jam and buttercream in between the layers and a light spread of buttercream on top. Then I did a chocolate ganache drip. In the end, despite the pictures, Oscar was far more interested in the yummy berries than in the cake, particularly strawberries which are his absolute favourite. Luckily mum and dad were on hand to help him finish it off and I can say with honesty it was absolutely delicious!

I hope I never forget this corny, over the top grin that Oscar is flashing almost constantly at the moment. It’s so cheesy and I love how it shows his two little teeth (yes he’s one but only has two teeth!). I know I’m biased but what a cutie!

Happy Birthday to my little guy. Life has just been so much better since you’ve been in it. We are so grateful and so lucky to have such an energetic, adventurous and wonderful person to call our son!
