Dean and I walk on the Nightcliff foreshore pretty much every day of the week, usually in the afternoon. We’d be crazy not to, seeing as our house is located just minutes from it and it’s absolutely gorgeous. A few days a week we are tortured by the dense and delicious smell of wood-fired pizza coming from a little pizza cart in what is locally known as the Seabreeze carpark. Cucina Sotto Le Stelle, or the Kitchen Under The Stars, is a fitting title for this pizza powerhouse.
Every time we walk past we linger over the smells, and the sights of pizza coming out of the oven, still smoking in the afternoon air. Every time we think: we should go there.
With our departure from Darwin approaching faster than ever, we figure that it’s better not to wait. There’s no saying what Darwin might be like when we return, and no guarantees on anything. So, we plan to catch up with two of our buddies and hit up the food cart early in the afternoon, before the pizza throngs arrive.
Rain nearly interrupts our little pizza date, but luckily it’s light enough that we barely notice the small shower as we perch on our mandala picnic rug beneath the trees. Of course, our attention is well-taken by our selection for the evening, pizza in the flavours of eggplant and shaved leg ham + mushrooms. Along we this we opt for the Pane, a pizza/garlic bread concoction that is draped in olive oil and delicious, followed up by strawberry panna cotta for dessert, a dish that makes us both take five minutes to drool and savour at its glory.
The crowds are just starting to emerge from the suburbs and find their seats on the grass beside Cucina Sotto Le Stelle as we’re finishing up. Sitting for a while and enjoying the atmosphere enjoyable for a time, but the beach and a sunset walk is calling, so we fold up our picnic rugs and head down to the ocean. In the fading light, walking across the sand bathed in blue and purple sunset colours, its enough to make me hesitant to leave, but it’s too late to change our minds now. Oh well, we can only hope that this little spot, complete with Cucina Sotto Le Stelle, will be back when we return.
